The year 2022 was filled with a variety of trending topics from Nigerian artists who made headlines due to one scandal or the other.

No matter how hard Nigerian musicians try, scandal always seems to find them; this is due to the nosy eyes of fans and anti-fans.

One might even be pushed to remark that is the cost of being a public figure.

Most often, the news is about their personal lives, relationships, businesses, and families, which causes a lot of drama, confrontations, and arguments between fans and critics.

In 2022, a few Nigerian musicians gained notoriety for entirely wrong reasons. In this article, Mp3bullet.ng has assembled a list of Nigerian artists who gained notoriety for their particular scandal in 2022.

1. Oxlade

Oxlade made headlines after his sex clip went viral on the internet on February 9th, 2022.

The video was leaked on Tuesday night via the social media platform Snapchat. Since the video went viral, internet users have lauded the musician for his ‘relational’ skills.

Although the girl implicated in the controversy has now demanded justice, claiming that her life has come to a halt while the singer moved on smoothly.

2. Timaya

Timaya was detained in March after a woman by the name of Omawumi called him out on Instagram for running over her sister with his car and seriously injuring her.

On a Thursday morning, armed police officers stormed into the musician’s home and took him away.

In the viral footage, the singer can be seen explaining to the police what happened during the suspected hit-and-run event before being taken away a little while later.

Omawumi claims that the reason the controversial artist was detained was that the victim questioned him for destroying her car and he purposefully rammed into her.

3. Portable

This controversial Nigerian musician gained notoriety after YBNL leader Olamide featured him in one of his songs. Even a year later, the Zazu Zeh crooner has continued to get attention, defying expectations that his rise to popularity would be fleeting.

The street-hop musician has garnered media attention for a variety of controversial topics, including his disagreements with many of his backers.

He made waves online when he posted a video in which he claimed to have founded the infamous One-Million Boys cult before retracting his claim.

He also gained headlines online after threatening whoever won the 2022 Headies award over him despite receiving two nominations.

The contentious musician claims that his song “Zazuu Zeh” is much more well-liked than the other tracks on the list. In addition, Portable asserted that he was more well-known on the street than his fellow nominees. He was eventually disqualified by the Organizers.

He also made news when a video of him attacking his signee, Manny Monie went viral.

In August, BNXN encountered his most controversial moment and joined the list of artists who had their s*xtape leaked.

A Swedish woman named Filma, who was allegedly the singer’s girlfriend, was reportedly seen in a bedroom with him in a video that went viral online.

Unverified rumours claim that she became pregnant for him and sought to come clean about their relationship, but he tried to quiet her.

While the video wasn’t as damning as Oxlade’s, it still made headlines as the singer had a girlfriend, Peggy.

5. Sammie Okpsoso

Late Gospel Artist, Sammie Okposo in January shocked the world when he took to Instagram to apologize to his wife, family, friends, and fans for his act of infidelity.

Later, an American lady, based in Texas, known as African Doll, accused Sammie Okposo of impregnating and abandoning her.

The lady decided to talk to a YouTuber, Obodo Naija TV about her predicament. According to the lady, she met Sammie in America when he went to perform.

According to African Doll, they messed around during his visit to America. And after this, she discovered she was pregnant and told Sammie about it but he told her to abort it.

In response to this accusation, Sammie called on the show to tell the anchor that he would be back to tell his own side of the story.

While the incident later died down, the singer’s name went viral months later after he died.

6. Kizz Daniel

Kizz Daniel had a mixture of a bad and great year. While his song, “Buga” was one of Nigerian biggest hits for the year, it wasn’t enough to save him from being arrested outside the shores of the country.

In August, the singer was arrested in Tanzania after he failed to show up for a performance leading to the destruction of property by angry fans.

According to reports, the musician declined to perform because his clothing was not available, and frustrated fans then tore the hall apart after paying as much as $5,000 for tables.

He was later released and he apologized to his fans over the incident and later made it up to them with a free concert.

In December, his name trended for the wrong reasons after his bouncer threw an overzealous fan who was trying to dance with him off the stage.

Apart from alleging that Soberekan, hired assassins against him, he also called out Skiibii and Kcee, noting that the trio are not his friends as widely assumed.

In reaction to the allegation, Soso Soberekon demanded that he retracts the statement and tender an apology.

In a suit filed by his legal representatives, the talent manager also requested the sum of N500 million for damages such claims caused to his reputation.

Soberekon petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba on grounds of defamation and threat to life by Harrysong.

8. Naira Marley

Differences between labels and artists are nothing new in Nigerian music. However, when claims of physical abuse are made and the label head is a celebrity and the artist is a fast-rising sensation, it unquestionably qualifies as news, especially in the age of social media.

Mohbad and Naira Marley notoriously feuded on social media as the former attempted to break free from his contract with Marlian Records.

Mohbad also accused Naira Marley of ordering his brother and crew to beat him up at the Marlian house, an allegation Naira Marley denied and blamed on Mohbad’s use of drugs.

Fans spread a lot of talk about the news on social media, making it one of the year’s main events.

9. D’banj

Weeks ago, netizens woke up to the news that singer, D’banj had been arrested by ICPC over fraud.

According to accounts, the artist was apprehended and held after ICPC agents surrounded him and forced him to present himself at the organization’s headquarters in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

D’banj allegedly avoided summonses for weeks by stating that he was abroad for scheduled concerts each time he was asked to appear for an interview about fraud allegations.

The pop star was accused of defrauding the Nigerian government of hundreds of millions of naira intended for the N-Power project, an empowerment initiative launched by the Nigerian government in 2016 to combat youth unemployment and advance social development.

Authorities allege that D’banj conspired with some corrupt government representatives to add bogus beneficiaries to the scheme’s payroll. Then, the recipients get payments into accounts that are now purportedly connected to the pop star.

The musician was repeatedly invited to appear for questioning but refused, so the ICPC sought to arrest him anywhere in Nigeria and overseas, requiring him to appear at the commission’s office.
