Nigerian superstar Davido has finally admitted that he has voice issues.
In an interview with TheNative, a music magazine, Davido said that he has been struggling with his voice for a while now. He said that he sometimes loses his voice before stage appearances, and that it is very frustrating for him.
He went on to claim that at some time, his doctor had advised him to refrain from needless verbal interaction.
“Because my voice is already husky, when my voice goes it’s so annoying. I like to express myself and I speak a lot, so when I can’t talk, it’s annoying.
It’s so uncomfortable when I have a show and my voice is not back, and I’m impatient so I’ll just be coughing,” he said.
Davido’s voice has always been a topic of discussion. Some people love his husky, raspy voice, while others find it off-putting. Davido himself has said that he doesn’t mind the criticism, and that he is just happy to be able to make music.
You recall when Wizkid called Davido “frog voice” in a tweet on July 5, 2017. Davido had just released a new song called “Summer Body” with Olamide, and some people speculated that the song was a diss track aimed at Wizkid. In response, Wizkid tweeted,
“My people make una remember say Yankee passport no be baba blue, e no dey cure frog voice.” This roughly translates to “My people, remember that a US passport is not a cure for a frog voice.”
Davido responded to Wizkid’s tweet by posting a video of himself singing along to “Summer Body” with the caption, “I’m not a frog, I’m a lion.” The two artists continued to trade barbs on social media for several days, but the feud eventually died down.
Despite his voice issues, Davido has continued to be one of the most successful musicians in Nigeria. He has released several hit singles and albums, and he has won numerous awards. He is also a very popular social media personality, with over 20 million followers on Instagram.
Wizkid has been vindicated though.
