Days ago, “Essence” officially became Wizkid’s most important song ever, inadvertently ending the “Ojuelegba” era for the 30-year-old superstar.

This happened when the Tems-assisted song off Wizkid‘s last album, “Made in Lagos” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts, becoming the first Nigerian song to debut on the platform. It was Wizkid‘s third entry on the chart and Tems‘ first, ever.

“Essence” is an afrobeat song produced by the Legendury Beatz production duo (who incidentally also produced “Ojuelegba“).

The song started catching on after the music video was released months ago. The song started trending, especially in the United States, where people are calling it the song of the summer.

For weeks now, the streams and sales have skyrocketed, with the song recording some of the highest gains on Spotify ever. Most of these streams have come from America.

Also, a number of celebrities (most international) including Kylie Jenner, Snoop Dogg and Saweetie, have posted videos of themselves vibing to the song. No doubt, “Essence” has become the most commercially successful single on the “Made in Lagos” album.

Is It The Best Song On The Album?

Looking at the numbers, it is not hard to determine that “Essence” is the most important track on the album, but still that doesn’t make it the best song on the album.

The album has 14 tracks and each and every one of them are solid. Maybe even more solid than “Essence.” Think of the hardest intro of all time, “Reckless,” or the Skepta-assisted “Longtime.” There’s also cheerful jams like “Blessed” and “Gyrate.” Not to forget songs like “Sweet One” that have that old “Superstar” vibe.

It is evident that there are definitely songs on “Made in Lagos” that will give “Essence” a run for its money. In my opinion. “Sweet One” is the best song on MIL.
