Is Jaido P’s “Survive” Olamide’s Best Performance Since “Carpe Diem”?

Olamide’s career trajectory has changed a lot since the beginning of 2020.

First he gave us one of the best hip-hop EP’s we’ve ever heard, “999” in February of 2020, just before the global pandemic and the beginning of a completely new era — for him and for the industry.

What followed was the best year in Nigerian music, and in the history of Afrobeats. The year everyone will remember as the year everything happened. Olamide was a big part of that history.

It’s crazy because Olamide has always been part of that Wizkid and Davido conversation, even as a rapper. No other rapper even came close to those two guys, it’s practically impossible. But Olamide has always been different.

Carpe Diem

Summer 2020, when he released “Carpe Diem,” it was clear what Olamide was going to become after that.

Carpe Diem wasn’t only his best album yet, it undoubtedly was a perfect Olamide show. It might even be impossible for him to ever top that. That’s how good the album is!

But at some point he’s gonna move on, for sure. And that’s what he’s done. He went into the booth and created a whole new album, a new kind of Olamide who we got a glimpse of on Carpe Diem.

UY Scuti

He called the album “UY Scuti” and did all sorts of amazing things on it, but still nothing close to what he did on the previous album.

The desperation for pop appeal is evident on the things he’s been doing ever since, and has even brought about criticism of what the OG is doing.

A week after he dropped “UY Scuti” though, he was on two songs as a guest. One with Reminisce from Reminisce‘s forthcoming album, and another with Jaido P, who he’s previously collaborated with on “Tesina Pot.”

Survive

On the new song with Jaido P, called “Survive,” Olamide flexed his solemn vocals once again. He took the hook, and the blend with the beat could just be the best thing we’ve heard from Olamide in a long time.

Jaido P was very cool too. Olamide influence, definitely. “Survive” has vibes that no one can really get tired of. You could play it one hundred times a day, and still it’ll cool your head every single time you hear it.

The thing is Baddo keeps trying. He does not stop. It’s only a matter of time before he gets better better songs.

But for now, “Survive” sounds like the best thing he’s done since he released “Carpe Diem” last year. “Rock” was a solid record too, though.
