DSS Releases Kano Singer Detained For Blasphemy

Ahmad Abdul, an Islamic artist who was detained for releasing a blasphemous song, has been released by the Department of State Services (SSS).

Abdul was detained for publishing the uncensored song “Barhama Gwaska,” which was deemed blasphemous and dangerous to the state.

Ismaila Na’abba Afakallah, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board, confirmed the song’s release on Monday, saying he had received hundreds of petitions against it from concerned individuals.

According to Afakallah, he denounced the singer to the SSS, who eventually apprehended him in a hotel where he had been hiding for days to avoid the mob.

After spending days in detention, the musician was reunited with his family, according to him.

“He has been released as he regretted and apologized over his offence, promising not repeat it again,” said Afakallah.

“We are not seeking arraigning people, we just want to see them repenting and rehabilitating,” Afakallah replied when asked why the board did not bring him before a court of law. He has previously shown regret and expressed contrition for the offense he committed.”

This isn’t the first time that individuals have been involved in a debate over music that are considered profane.

Yahaya Sharif-Aminu was sentenced to death by a higher Sharia Court in the Hausawa Filin Hockey area of the state in August last year after being found guilty of releasing and disseminating a blasphemous song via WhatsApp.

On January 21, 2021, the judgment was quashed by the High Court of Kano.
