D’banj used to be Nigeria’s biggest musical export and the single most influential artist in the industry. “Used to be.”
But D’banj is that guy that never leaves. He doesn’t just fade away, he’s the Michael Jackson of the music industry and if the facts tell us anything, it is that he will be here longer than we all expected.
Born Oladapo Oyebanjo, the 41-year-old ex-pop star has had one of the most iconic careers of all time, starting in the early 2000s making hits with Don Jazzy. His first album, “No Long Thing” came far back in 2005, and shot him to stardom instantly.
It wasn’t until his classic album “The Entertainer” that he was able to flex all of his creative muscles and wow the industry for real. The album released in 2008 is probably the most important solo body of work in contemporary Nigerian music.
What followed that was D’banj‘s legendary foray into the international scene, leading up to his 2012 hit, “Oliver Twist.” The single, first released in the UK, entered the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart, becoming one of the most successful Nigerian songs to date.
Since the international stint in the early 2010s, D’banj has just been here and there, musically. His last album, “King Don Come” came in 2017 and his last big hit was 2018’s “Issa Banger,” a song that championed the shaku-shaku era of the music industry.
But will D’banj ever go away?
Banga
Apparently, the koko master is back with a new tune called “Banga,” a nod to his Bangalee moniker, of course.
The new song is a ‘classic’ afrobeat jam, and it even features vocals and instrumentals from Egypt 80, Fela Kuti‘s old band that is now being led by his son, Seun Kuti.
D’banj, who has always had a knack for the Fela genre, and has in the past made Afrobeat hits like “Emergency,” is most likely banking on this song wetting the streets for an even more dramatic return. So, is D’banj going to drop a new album? Maybe, maybe not.
What’s important is that this guy has been here for almost twenty years and he still keeps resurfacing and pulling up with new stuff like he just came yesterday.
Long after some of today’s hottest stars are gone, D’banj would probably be in his 60s still trying to crack the market by making an R&B hit. I mean, who’s gonna stop him now?
