Nigerian music star Rema’s “Calm Down” has been breaking barriers and making waves in the Afrobeats genre globally.
The 22-year-old artist recently collaborated with American singer Selena Gomez on the “Calm Down” remix, which became the first African song to reach number one on the Billboard Global 200 chart.
The impact of “Calm Down” has been immense, with the song being certified platinum in the US, gold in the UK, diamond in France, and 3X Platinum in Portugal. All of these milestones were achieved within a year of the song’s release.
So, is “Calm Down” Nigeria’s all-time biggest song?
Currently, only two other Nigerian songs can compete with “Calm Down” in terms of global impact and cultural significance. These songs are “Love Nwantiti” by CKay and “Essence” by Wizkid (featuring Tems).
CKay’s “Love Nwantiti” holds the all-time record for being the highest certified African song in the history of RIAA, with a 4X platinum certification in the US.
Wizkid’s “Essence” has received more international awards and nominations than any other Nigerian song in history and is the second highest certified African song in the US, after “Love Nwantiti”.
Despite the success of “Essence” and “Love Nwantiti”, “Calm Down” has taken the lead in terms of global domination. When considering the time frame between the three songs, it’s clear that “Calm Down” has achieved more in a shorter period.
For example, “Calm Down” set a record as the most viewed Afrobeats music video on YouTube, surpassing CKay’s hit “Love Nwantiti” in just 11 months. On Spotify, “Calm Down” has accumulated more streams than Wizkid’s “Essence” and may soon overtake “Love Nwantiti” before its second anniversary of release.
It’s only a matter of time before “Calm Down” surpasses all the achievements made by “Essence” and “Love Nwantiti” and officially becomes Nigeria’s all-time biggest song.
