The Ras General, (given name… Stanley Onwu) was born into a military family in Abia State in the Eastern part of Nigeria, a Rastaman and one of the pioneer reggae artistes in the country.
Together with his three brothers the Ras General formed the first family reggae band to come out of Nigeria and probably Africa as a whole, a very militant reggae band called the Rasta Officers with him as the song writer, lead singer and rhythm guitarist.
In 1990 he published ‘The Nigerian Rastafarians-who are they?’ The book officially launched the Rastafari movement into the National Library Catalog.
The Rasta Officers band was signed to Leader Records and later the Ras General would relocate to Ghana where he became a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel and also met another Rastaman, Original Ras Korby and they started another reggae band known as the Nazarite Vow band, one of the biggest and most militant reggae outfits in Ghana at the time. The duo recorded an album titled ‘Free’ for the German-based Kelele Records.
The Ras General always on the move, later migrated to the United States of America where he still resides with his family.
He has performed alongside many local and international acts including many Jamaican reggae legends such as Mutabaruka, Yesus Afari, Culture, Don Carlos, Buju Banton, Toots and the Maytals to mention a few.
The Ras General is a poet (Dangerous Game–Outskirts Press), writer, singer, actor and movie producer. He played a major role alongside Jamaica’s movie star Paul Campbell in the movie The Jamaican Mafia.
His new movie “NOT JUST ENOUGH” shot in Nigeria is set to be released soon while he has another production coming up soon in New York.
